Colleges in Singapore

Junior Colleges

Pre university education in Singapore is also for two years and is done mostly in a Junior College (or abbreviated as JC). There are more than 16 Junior Colleges in Singapore but scholars are usually enrolled to only the top eight Junior colleges in Singapore. There is no criteria (or at least none revealed) through which the students are enrolled in these Junior Colleges and the scholar does not get an option to choose which college he/she wants to go to. More often than not, the college to which a student is going is not released until the scholar reaches Singapore. Below is the list of the Junior Colleges where SIA Scholars are enrolled in order of their rank (ranking not official)

  1. Raffles Junior College
  2. Hwa Chong Junior College*
  3. Victoria Junior College
  4. National Junior College
  5. Temasek Junior College
  6. Anderson Junior College**
  7. Anglo Chinese Junior College
  8. Saint Andrews Junior College**

General information on these Junior Colleges can be found here or one can also go to the respective websites of the Junior Colleges.

*Being mostly a Chinese cultured College, no scholars have been recruited in it since the past few years.

**Maximum number of scholars are enrolled in these two colleges.

Which College is Better?

There is a vast difference between all the Junior Colleges. Each College has its own pros and cons, but somehow they all add up such that it does not matter that much to which college you go.

The top bracket includes colleges like Raffles and Hwa Chong which have a much higher standard than the rest. This higher standard is relevant in most of the fields: reputation, facilities, level of education, sports or extra circular activities. However, these colleges are highly competitive and a scholar going there might not be able to find enough opportunities. Also, since the level of education is higher than other Colleges, it is a bit harder to score your A's compared to other Colleges.

Colleges like Anderson Junior College and Saint Andrews Junior College may not be of the same level as others, but then scholars do find a lot of opportunities to excel in academics and co circular activities and represent their colleges.

Finally, all the other Colleges fall in the middle bracket and present a striking balance between their upper and lower bracket of Colleges.

JC Life

JC life can be very challenging and also demanding. Even though the level of education is not that high compared to that of IIT preparation in India, but still there a lot of things one has to cope with throughout the two years. Coming back from College before 5 pm is a rarity. All the Colleges believe in holistic education and hence apart from academics, there are a variety of avenues in which you can show your skills, talents and interests.

There are a variety of subject combinations to choose from. Most of the scholars usually choose their non medical counterpart subjects; namely physics, chemistry and Mathematics. However, another option could be to choose subjects like Computing or Economics which also have a high value. Apart from these subjects, there are some compulsory subjects which a student has to offer: General Paper (renamed Knowledge Inquiry) and Project Work. General paper is quite different from the Normal English in the CBSE Boards. It is much more analytical and knowledge based and really tests these skills to the core. Project Work, on the other hand is a fairly easy one year assignment, in which students have to choose a topic and research and come to a conclusion on that.

As part of the holistic development, students are made to go through a rigorous physical education program, which can be really tough for the guys. In the end, all students have to go through a Physical Education Test, where they are awarded medals.

Each student is required (or at least recommended) to take part in at least one Co-Circular activity (or CCA). These activities could cover a variety of disciplines: academics, sports, cultural, music or representative activities. These activities or clubs further provide opportunity to assume leadership and responsible roles in the respective CCA's. Scholars should try and excel in their respective CCA's as these too are considered very important in colleges. Students are also encouraged to take part in service learning to promote a sense of service to the society. Research has also assumed a lot of importance in Singapore. There are a lot of research attachments available even at the Junior College level. Two of the most prestigious ones are Science Research Program or SRP (Attachment with NUS) and Nanyang Research Program or NRP (Attachment with NTU).

All the Junior Colleges are very strict in disciplinary matters and expect a good code of conduct from every student especially the scholars. Even a normal leave from College requires a Medical Certificate to be presented to the teacher.

The teachers in the colleges are generally helpful and well versed with their subjects. The teaching system follows lecture-tutorial method, whereby a certain topic is first studied in huge lecture halls and then more closely monitored by subject tutors in tutorial lessons. The libraries in all the Colleges contain a vast and sufficient catalog of books and other reference material.
