Facilities

Phone

There are three mobile service providers in Singapore: M1, Starhub and Singtel. You can either go for a Mobile Plan or use prepaid card. Normally, people prefer mobile plans and there are a variety of mobile plans to choose from according to one's own preferences and requirements. However, as the scholar would still be under 18 at that time, he/she has to pay a refundable deposit of S$200 to the mobile company. Alternatively, he/she can find a Singapore Citizen/Permanent Resident guaranteer.

Apart from this, contact can also be made by buying calling cards which can help you to call India from public phone booths. Usually, everyone possesses a mobile phone there and it is very important for establishing a contact both with people in Singapore and back at home.

Internet

Internet is used widely not only as a means of communication but is also used extensively in education. Usually, each hostel has internet services for the boarders and may charge it at a nominal rate. Libraries in school also provide Internet services, though mainly for education and it too is free of cost.

Transportation

The basic transportation facilities are nothing less than excellent and extremely efficient. There are basically two modes of transportation relevant to a scholar there: Public bus and MRT (Mass rapid Transport). After getting your student pass (end of January), you will be able to apply for a Students EZ-Link card which will subsidize your cost of transportation to quite some extent. However, before that, one has to use an Adult EZ-Link card for travelling purposes.

Almost all the buses are air conditioned and are in very good shape. The bus stops are placed at strategic places and one does not need to walk for long to reach a bus stop. Also, the buses arrive at a very good and consistent frequency. The cost of travelling in a bus can range from 30 to 45 cents (Students Ex Link Card). Apart from this, some hostels also provide chartered buses at subsidized rates which go from hostel to school only.

The MRT system is a very fast and efficient way of covering long distances. Trains arrive at frequencies ranging from 2 minutes at peak hours to 9 minutes. The EZ Link card can also be used for MRT and the cost of a travel ranges from 35 to 45 cents.

Other than this, a scholar can also travel by cabs, though the cost of travel by a cab is usually quite high. In all, the transportation system of Singapore is remarkable and there should be no problem at all in travelling.

Banking

Just after a day or two on your arrival to Singapore, the scholarship officers will take you for a trip down to one of the POSB offices, where you will open your bank account. After that you can put all your money in the bank. The bank will also issue you an ATM Card which will help you to manage your account from an ATM machines. ATM machines can easily be found at the MRT Stops or shopping centres. You can also apply for a Bank credit card (free of cost) which will help you in your online transactions.
