Hostels

Introduction

As part of the scholarship, scholars are given free accommodation in hostels close to their respective colleges. While some of the hostels like Raffles Institution Boarding (for raffles junior College) are located in the campus itself, others like Oldham hall (for Anderson Junior College) may be located at some distance away from the College. The hostels provide free accommodation in the holidays too, should the scholar choose to stay back during the holidays.

Rooms

Though the hostels may vary, but still rooms are generally quite good in all the hostels. They are spacious with adequate provisions and facilities. The number of people sharing a room can vary from 2 to 8 people. Some of the hostels even have air conditioned rooms.

Diversity

Apart from Indians, there are a lot of scholars from other countries too (mostly from the ASEAN countries). While mostly boarders of the same nationality are grouped together, on some occasions, they may be paired with people from different countries. Mostly, boarders from other countries are also very friendly people and it should not be a problem to get along with them. Actually, we too were paired up with three Malaysians and we had no problem whatsoever. However, in case of failure to adjust with room partners, a scholar can request the hostel authorities to change his/her room.

Facilites and Hostel Life

The hostel also provides for laundry facilities. Although the laundry facilities are free in every hostel, submitting all your clothes (especially expensive clothes) for laundry may not be the best option. Apart from this, there are also washing and drying machines, which can be self operated after putting in some money in the machines.

There are also computer and internet facilities and common rooms with television and DVD sets. Apart from this, one can also loan out sports or games equipment from hostel. Most of the hostels also provide facilities for sports , music and culture. For food facilities in hostel, click here.

There are some rules for hostel as well. There is a Lights Out time, before which all boarders are to return to their respective rooms and switch off all the lights. If one wants to study after that, he/she can do so under a table lamp. In case a boarder wishes to stay out after Lights Out or wants to stay with some relative, then he/she can do so by requesting the hostel authorities and providing a valid reason.

Hostel Life is not that boring. A lot keeps on happening in the hostel and there are various activities and competitions arranged from time to time. There are functions arranged for special days and everybody is allowed to participate in them. Apart from this, a scholar can also join some clubs in the hostel relevant to his interest.
